A mission-driven organisation advancing civic participation, peacebuilding, and social justice through community-led solutions across Kenya.
Our core programming brings people together to strengthen civic participation, build peace across differences, and advance social justice and protection.
We help people understand their rights, take part in public decisions and organise around local priorities. Dira combines practical civic learning with community-led structures that support informed and sustained participation.
Learn More →We create trusted spaces where people can listen, address tensions and build relationships across differences. Dira supports community dialogue, youth-led peacebuilding, local peace forums, storytelling and reconciliation.
Learn More →We advance dignity, safety and fair participation for people who are often excluded. Dira connects inclusion and protection work with practical humanitarian and livelihood support so community members can participate more safely and fully in local development.
Learn More →Dira is a Swahili word that means direction, guidance, and purpose.
It reflects the belief that every person and every community deserves the opportunity to move forward with dignity, hope, and a shared vision for the future. Dira Community Development Center was founded from a simple but profound conviction: communities should not have to wait for tragedy before their voices are heard.
Following a national moment of reflection on 25 June 2024, our founders asked: What if young people and communities had trusted spaces to engage, organise, and influence decisions peacefully before frustration reached a breaking point? On 25 June 2026, Dira was formally registered under Kenyan law to turn that vision into lasting community-led action.
Grounded in everyday civic reality, our initiatives prepare young leaders, open dialogue platforms, and dismantle barriers to equality.
Preparing young people to lead, participate, and shape the future of their communities through civic learning, mentorship, and collective action.
Inspired by the traditional baraza, creating trusted spaces for residents, local leaders, and public institutions to address community concerns collaboratively.
Engaging men and boys to challenge harmful social norms, prevent violence, and champion dignity and inclusion for women, girls, and marginalized individuals.
When communities lead and institutions listen, dignity is restored, peace is strengthened, and lasting development becomes possible.
We welcome conversations with foundations, donors, civil society organisations, community groups, volunteers, and businesses who share our commitment to inclusive, community-led development.
