Action in Communities

Our Community Initiatives

We believe that strong communities are built when people have a voice in decisions that affect their lives, their rights are respected, and they have opportunities to shape their own futures.

Rooted in Community Priorities

Our initiatives connect good governance and social justice with the broader goal of building communities where people live with dignity.

Our initiatives bring communities together to strengthen civic participation, nurture young leaders, promote peace and inclusion, and advance policies that respond to people's needs. We recognize that meaningful development also depends on people's ability to access opportunities, improve their livelihoods, and participate fully in community life.

Through community engagement, leadership development, dialogue, and advocacy, we work alongside communities to address shared challenges, challenge exclusion, and promote lasting change. Our approach connects good governance and social justice with the broader goal of building communities where people can live with dignity, participate meaningfully, and pursue better opportunities for themselves and their families.

Dira Youth Fellowship

Preparing young people to lead, participate, and shape the future of their communities.

Young people have ideas, perspectives, and the potential to influence the decisions that shape their lives. Yet many have limited opportunities to engage meaningfully in governance, contribute to public decision-making, or turn their ideas into action within their communities.

The Dira Youth Fellowship, an initiative of Dira Community Development Center, seeks to help change that.

The fellowship is designed to nurture a generation of informed, confident, and community-minded young leaders who understand their role in shaping society. It creates space for young people to strengthen their leadership skills, deepen their understanding of governance and civic participation, and learn how to engage constructively with the institutions and decision-makers responsible for public affairs.

Through learning, mentorship, peer exchange, and community engagement, fellows will be encouraged to question, explore solutions, share ideas, and take initiative on issues that matter to their communities. The fellowship's focus includes civic participation, public accountability, advocacy, peacebuilding, social justice, and inclusive community development.

At its heart, the Dira Youth Fellowship is about more than developing individual leaders. It is about helping young people recognize their collective potential, build relationships across communities, and participate in creating solutions that reflect the needs and aspirations of the people they represent.

At Dira, we believe young people should not have to wait for the future to make a difference. They deserve the knowledge, opportunities, and space to shape it today.

Community Forums (Mabaraza ya Jamii)

A space for communities to speak up, listen to one another, and shape decisions that affect their lives.

In every community, people have concerns, ideas, and hopes for a better future. From access to public services and opportunities for young people to safety, livelihoods, and local development, these issues deserve to be heard and discussed. But too often, the people most affected have little opportunity to engage directly with leaders and decision-makers.

Dira Community Development Center’s Community Forums create that space.

Inspired by the spirit of the traditional baraza, these forums bring community members, local leaders, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders together to discuss issues affecting their lives, share perspectives, and explore practical solutions. They give people an opportunity to speak openly, ask questions, raise concerns, and contribute to conversations about the future of their communities.

Through these mabaraza ya jamii, Dira promotes civic awareness, meaningful public participation, peaceful dialogue, and accountability. The forums also help bridge the gap between communities and public institutions by encouraging constructive engagement between citizens and those responsible for making decisions on their behalf.

Whether the discussion is about local development priorities, governance, social justice, peace, or opportunities for young people, the aim is to ensure that community voices are heard and considered in the decisions that affect them.

For Dira, a baraza is more than a gathering. It is an opportunity for people to come together, understand their rights, exchange ideas, hold constructive conversations with leaders, and take an active role in shaping their communities.

Male Allieship Initiative

Challenging toxic masculinity. Preventing violence. Promoting equality and inclusion.

Harmful beliefs about masculinity, power, and gender roles can contribute to violence, abuse, and discrimination. Attitudes that normalize male dominance, aggression, control, and entitlement can harm relationships and reinforce inequalities within communities. Women and girls continue to experience gender-based violence, while LGBTQ+ people also face violence, harassment, and discrimination because of who they are.

Dira Community Development Center’s Male Allieship Initiative works to challenge these harmful attitudes by engaging men and boys in conversations and actions that promote respect, equality, accountability, and non-violence. The initiative encourages men and boys to examine their beliefs, question harmful behaviours, and understand how their everyday actions can either reinforce inequality or contribute to positive change.

Through community dialogues, awareness activities, peer engagement, and collaboration with local leaders and community organizations, Dira promotes healthier expressions of masculinity, respectful relationships, and peaceful ways of resolving conflict. The initiative also encourages men and boys to speak out against gender-based violence, challenge discrimination against women and LGBTQ+ people, and take an active role in making their communities safer and more inclusive.

By addressing harmful social norms and encouraging personal and collective responsibility, the initiative seeks to help build communities where violence is not excused, discrimination is challenged, and every person can live with dignity and participate without fear of abuse or exclusion.

Policy and Advocacy Initiative

Amplifying community voices. Influencing policy. Advancing social justice.

Dira Community Development Center’s Policy and Advocacy Initiative works to strengthen community participation in decision-making and promote policies and practices that advance equality, justice, accountability, and inclusive development.

We believe that communities should have a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect their lives. Through community dialogues, policy engagement, public awareness, research, and strategic partnerships, we seek to bring community experiences and priorities into public discussions and decision-making processes.

Our advocacy focuses on accountable governance, civic participation, human rights, gender equality, prevention of gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and equitable access to opportunities and services. We work to amplify the voices of communities facing exclusion, challenge discriminatory practices, and encourage constructive engagement between citizens, public institutions, and other decision-makers.

Through this initiative, Dira aims to support community-led advocacy, strengthen public participation, and contribute to policies and institutions that are more responsive to the needs and rights of the people they serve.

Our goal is to help build a society where community voices matter, rights are respected, institutions are accountable, and everyone can participate in shaping decisions that affect their lives.
