Thematic Profile

Our Work & Thematic Focus

Strong communities are built when people can organise around shared concerns, influence decisions that affect their lives, and work together towards a better future.

Our Approach

How Our Work is Organised

Our work brings people together to strengthen civic participation and accountable governance, build peace across differences, and advance social justice, inclusion, and protection.

We support communities to identify their priorities, develop collective leadership, engage decision-makers, and take action on the issues that matter to them.

We also recognise that meaningful participation is harder when people face economic hardship or lack access to opportunities. By connecting community-led action with efforts to strengthen local capacity and improve livelihood opportunities, we seek to address barriers that prevent people from participating fully in community life.

Our approach is rooted in the belief that communities are not simply recipients of development. They are essential partners in shaping the decisions, relationships, and opportunities that determine their future.

Core Delivery Principles

  • Listening First: Community dialogues shape all programme agendas.
  • Local Ownership: Initiatives are sustained by community facilitators and fellows.
  • Constructive Engagement: Connecting citizens directly with duty bearers and public institutions.
  • Dignity & Protection: Ensuring marginalized groups participate safely without stigma.

Pillar 1

Civic Knowledge, Policy Engagement and Participatory Governance

We help people understand their rights, take part in public decisions and organise around local priorities. Dira combines practical civic learning with community-led structures that support informed and sustained participation.

Through workshops, civic education circles, and public accountability forums, we equip citizens with the tools to analyse local government budgets, track service delivery, and engage local administrators with clarity and confidence.

Peacebuilding, Dialogue and Social Cohesion

We create trusted spaces where people can listen, address tensions and build relationships across differences. Dira supports community dialogue, youth-led peacebuilding, local peace forums, storytelling and reconciliation.

In urban settlements and diverse rural communities, we facilitate open mabaraza and structured mediations to de-escalate tensions, resolve resource disputes peacefully, and heal trauma through shared human stories.

We focus on women, young people, persons with disabilities, and underserved groups who face layered discrimination, ensuring they have equitable access to justice, economic resilience, and protective networks.
